Tell me your story

How we die matters – to us and to our friends and family. And yet so little has been written about this. Literature, films and TV very often deal with death and dying in a dramatic and violent way, other books guide you through the dry, practical aspects of planning ahead. I want to write about real-life stories which show the everyday reality of death.

These questions might guide you in writing about your friend or family member:

  • If you could describe their final chapter as a scene in a book, what would it look like? What conversations stand out with the person who was dying? Was there something said that still echoes with you or surprised you— a joke, an apology, advice, a blessing?

  • Was there a moment of unexpected beauty ? A reconciliation, laughter, a favorite song, a peaceful expression?

  • What effect did this experience have on you?

  • What would you want readers to understand about end of life situations that people often get wrong?
